Touch Screen Monitors

Touch screen monitors are a device by which we give inputs and take outputs as information without using any other external device. Instead of using a keyboard or mouse.

A touch screen is a display which can detect the presence and location of a touch within the display area. The term generally refers to touch or contact to the display of the device by a finger or hand. Touch screens can also sense other passive objects, such as a stylus.

The touch screen has two main qualities. First, it allows you to interact with what is displayed directly on the screen, where it is displayed, rather than indirectly with a mouse (computing) or touchpad. Secondly, it lets one do so without requiring any intermediate device, again, such as a stylus that needs to be held in the hand.

Touch screen monitors are used in a variety of different applications including POS (point of sale) cash registers, PDA's (personal digital assistants), ATM's, car navigation screens, cell phones, gaming consoles and any other type of appliance that requires you to input and receive information.

Types of technology available in Touch Screen. The commonly used are underneath: -

Resistive Touch monitors

A resistive touch screen monitor usually has a coat of very thin electrically conductive and resistive layer of metal. When pressed, the change in electrical current can be measured and the input processed by a computer. While very affordable they only offer about 75% clarity, they can also be easily damaged by objects that are sharp. Resistive touch screen monitors are the most popular types of touch screen monitors used today. They are usually not effected by dust or liquids which make them very reliable.

Surface Wave Touch Screen Monitors

Surface wave touch screen monitors use ultrasonic waves to process inputs from the screen. Ultrasonic waves flow over the touch screen, when a person touches the pad at a specific location, the wave is absorbed and immediately processed by the computer. While not as common as resistive touch panels, they are used in certain applications. Dust and water can contaminate a surface wave touch screen so it is important to keep the screens properly maintained.

Capacitive Touch Screen Monitors

Capacitive touch screens are coated with indium tin oxide. This material provides a continuous current across the screen. The current is precisely controlled throughout the touch pad and can be measured by the computer processor, when touched; the screen is able to send the processor specific coordinates to input information correctly. It is important to note that specific objects can only be used on capacitive touch screens. You can not use a stylus or a pencil for instance; usually you will need a bare finger. Capacitive touch screens have high clarity and are not affected by dust or liquids.

Infrared Touch Screen Monitors

There are two types of Infrared touch screen monitor screens, the first reacts to infrared or thermal waves (heat), unfortunately this technology is slow and does not work well with cold hands or objects. The second type of Infrared touch screen monitors use vertical and horizontal infrared sensors around the perimeter of the touch screen. Creating a grid, the touch screen is able to pinpoint the exact location of where the screen has been touched and send that information to the computer for processing. Infrared touch screen monitors are very durable and are used for industrial and military applications.

There are many different types of touch screen technology available. The most common types include: Resistive, Surface Wave, Capacitive and Infrared.

How can I move the taskbar from the right of the screen back to the bottom of the screen?

The blue taskbar and the start button somehow switched to the side of the screen on my computer.I dont know if I mistakenly pushed the wrong button or what But I need help with placing it back at the bottom of the page.If anyone know anything about the options for the taskbar,Please Help?

Click on the bar (any clear space not occupied by a button) and then you can drag it back the bottom.

If this doesn't work then you need to unlock the taskbar. To do this right-click on the bar, and then deselect the "Lock Toolbar option"

When Should I Upgrade to Cat-6 Cable?

Upgrading to Cat-6, or to give it its full name, Category-6 cable, is generally done in computer networking when all of the components used are rated at higher speeds and will therefore require the increased bandwidth that this particular cabling can provide.

What is Cat-6 Cable?

Consisting of pairs of copper wires that are twisted together much like other cables, Cat-6 cable is used for transmitting data at high speeds. The gauge of the copper wire used may be anywhere from 22 to 24; provided that cable meets all of the usual testing standards although, you will find that the medium size of 23 is the favoured gauge. And, the category of Cat-6 cabling will be indicated in small print on the sheath of the cable itself, making it simple to tell one type from another.

Cat-6 cable is ideal for a variety of networking needs and suitable for the following:

- 10base-T
- 100base-TX (Fast Ethernet)
- 1000base-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet)
- 10Gbase-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)

Benefits of Using Cat-6 Cable

The main benefit of using Cat-6 cable is having guaranteed capabilities of at least 200MHz and a maximum of 250MHz, which is becoming more and more of an essential quality in this day and age, with users streaming numerous media applications concurrently, all of which have a tendency to stretch the limits of Cat-5e cabling.

Although increased bandwidth is usually the first benefit of Cat-6 cable that comes to mind, albeit a rather important one, there are still several others to consider that enhance performance in comparison to its predecessors Cat-5 and Cat-5e cables, such as far more stringent specification standards.

Both NEXT (near-end cross talk) and FEXT (far-end cross talk) have been improved with Cat-6 cable thanks to more twists in the wires which reduces system noise and the number of retransmissions and errors. Cat-6 cable is also backwards compatible, meaning it can be used successfully with previous cable standards.

Upgrading to Cat-6 Cable

All too often computer users and network administrators make the common mistake of believing that upgrading to Cat-6 cable will instantly improve transmission performance, erroneously thinking that the upgrade will provide them with an all gigabit Ethernet.

A gigabit Ethernet, which is the protocol used in LANs (local area networks), provides a transmission data rate of one gigabit, or one billion bits, per second. All of the components used, not just the cable to connect everything together, must be capable of sending and receiving data at up to one billion bits a second in order to be a true gigabit network. Even if one component does not have these capabilities, the entire network may suffer as a result.

Once you are certain that every single component in your network is gigabit certified, you can then upgrade to Cat-6 cable if so desired. The components in your gigabit certified network will include peripherals such as routers, hubs, switches, patch panels, and NICs (network interface cards).

Remember that if cost is a concern, a High Quality Cat-5e cable can be capable of running near or even at gigabit speeds but cannot be certified or guaranteed as such.

Notebook Display: WXGA, WSXGA or WUXGA?

When buying a widescreen notebook, it can be a bit confusing to pick the right LCD. Generally, you are given a choice between WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA notebook displays. What are these and which do you choose?

WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA

The above acronyms are resolution standards for television and computer monitors. All of them refer to widescreen display standards: WXGA stands for Widescreen Extended Graphics Array; WSXGA for Widescreen Super Extended Graphics Array; and WUXGA for Widescreen Ultra Extended Graphics Array.

WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA are not the only display standards for screen displays, but they are the most common in notebook computers. True to widescreen standards, all three of these have an aspect ratio in the range of 16/9 to 16/10. They mainly differ in their resolution (the number of pixels they can display on screen).

While all widescreen displays can use resolutions lower than their rated display, they provide the best image at their native resolution, which is also their maximum resolution. Keep in mind that a lower resolution is much easier on the eyes, so you will want to go with a native resolution that does not leave you squinting at the screen in your day-to-day use.

WXGA has a 1366x768 resolution, an aspect ratio of 16/9. WSXGA boasts a greater resolution at 1680x1050 and an aspect ratio of 16/10. WUXGA uses a resolution of 1920x1200 at an aspect ratio of 16/10.

What to Pick?

If you are buying a notebook computer for gaming purposes, you probably want a WUXGA screen for the sharpest image. If you are an HDTV subscriber and you plan to use your notebook computer as an HDTV receiver, WUXGA gives the very highest resolution available. WUXGA is also great for watching movies and viewing digital images due to the sharp rendering of images and pictures.

WUXGA is very convenient for multi-tasking, provided you can handle the small display size. This is perfect for working on two documents or web pages side-by-side, which can enhance productivity.

A WUXGA LCD can display greater amounts of detail than both WXGA and WSXGA, so you can see on the screen. This is not to say that WXGA and WSXGA have nothing to recommend them. In fact, WUXGA is not for everyone.

If the notebook computer does not have a powerful mobile GPU and a 17-inch or larger LCD, high-resolution gaming potential will be more difficult, as it takes a high-end GPU to push modern games to 1920x1200 resolutions. As mentioned, customers with less than excellent vision are better off choosing WXGA to get the largest text display. If you want a notebook display with medium-sized text, sharp images, and less than 17 inches of physical screen size, WSXGA is a good compromise, and the 1680x1050 resolution is nothing to sneeze at, by any means.

Repair damaged Toshiba PA3237U-1ACA AC Adapter Power jack

In order to access and repair the Toshiba PA3237U-1ACA AC Adapter power jack, it’s necessary to disassemble the laptop and remove the top cover assembly (palm rest). Here’s an example of removing the top cover assembly from a Toshiba Satellite L355D, you’ll have to follow these steps.
In my case both, the Toshiba ac adapter power jack and mounting brackets on the base assembly got broken. Even if you replace the broken jack with a new one, it will not stay attached to the base. If you send a laptop with a damage like that to a repair shop, they will recommend replacing the Toshiba PA3237U-1ACA AC Adapter power jack harness and laptop base. This repair will easily cost over $200 but I have a better idea how to fix it for $3 without replacing the base assembly.
Using a pocket knife remove plastic supports from the internal side of the base assembly, so the side where the new jack will be mounted is flat. Again, using the pocket knife remove the plastic wall surrounding the mounting hole. Make the hole larger, so then new Jack Fits in.
The new Toshiba PA3237U-1ACA AC Adapter jack is too long and if you install it as is the laptop cover will not sit properly on the base. It happens because one of the speakers (in Satellite L305D) is located very close to the power jack. It will work if you make the jack shorter. You can cut off part of the long lead or simply bent it as I did. After it’s done coat both leads with generous amount of solder.
Now remove the damaged Toshiba PA3237U-1ACA AC Adapter power jack from the laptop and cut off wires somewhere close to the jack base. Remove isolation, twist wires and coat them with solder. The red “+†wire will connect to the lead in the center of the new jack. The black “-†wire will connect to the lead on the side – the one you made shorter. In some laptops Toshiba uses green wires instead or red wires. They also should be soldered to the “+†lead in the center of your new jack.
WARNING! Check the polarity before you apply power to the laptop.

My Gateway Laptop (MD2614u)'s power jack is pretty loose. What can I do to make it fit better?

I just bought this laptop and the Power Connector on the laptop doesn't feel very secure, is there a way to make it fit nicely? It doesn't fall off, I am just paranoid about it.

Other than replacement, no. Its a pretty common problem because people tend to either forget they have it plugged in and wander off and that gives it a hearty jerk or they but it up against something, creating pressure that makes it loose. Just be careful with it and take care of you laptop and it should be a while before you have to have it repaired. Just save up now tho to repair it later.

my computer won't recognize my Transfer Kit (cable)?

i'm trying to update my roster for nfl 2k5. i've got the roster file. i'm running xplorer, and i;ve got my Hard Drive connected to my computer via the migration kit (cable). xplorer can't locate my xbox hard drive. my computer doesn't think anything is plugged into my Usb Drive. is there a simple solution im overseeing or didnt i pay for a busted transfer kit? btw im using my xbox 360 for all this not xbox original

when you say transfer kit do you mean the kit that came from microsoft that transfers data from one Xbox HD to another? if yes than its not gonna work. the transfer kits are meant to send all data from one 360 HDD to another and nothing else. it doesnt work for simple USB to USB transfers, and in fact (unless altered) will be completely useless for anything other than complete 360 HDD to HDD transfers,

if you meant some other USB transfer device its not gonna work either. the 360 hard drive (unless altered) is only compatible with the 360 console. meaning you cannot move any none-XBL stuff (other than music files from a CD) on to the hardrive.
