how is the Dell 3008WFP 30 inch UltraSharp monitor for gaming?

i ordered the Dell 3008WFP 30 inch UltraSharp monitor to hook up my playstation with. ive yet to receive it but i am fairly excitied and wanted some feedback from people who may know a little about this sort of thing. should I be impressed with moving up from a 27" mitsubishi?

The 3008WFP is a very nice monitor indeed.

However, I think it's way overkill for the PS3. Remember the PS3 can only go up to 1920x1080 resolution over its Hdmi Cable, which carries only a single-link Dvi Video signal (limited to 1920x1080).

The 3008WFP displays 2560x1600 resolution and requires a dual-Link Dvi signal to work at that resolution, which the PS3 cannot do. When the monitor scales up the 1920x1080 signal from the PS3 to display it at 2560x1600, you will see some pixilation. (I don't think you will be impressed).

The optimum monitor / TV for use with the PS3 would be something that does 1920x1080 resolution. For the PS3, a 52" Lcd Hdtv that does 1080p actually works better than the 3008WFP.

Hook up that 3008WFP to a computer that has a dual-link DVI Video Card, and I think you will be impressed.

Video Mapping System with Plasma Screens & Video Projectors

This is a case study of a project based on the technology in our previous article on Video Mapping Projector Effects.

We were asked to visit Karma Bar in Brighton Marina to design a new visual system to tie in for the re-launch the venue was planning. With the employment of new DJs, the venue wanted to add a system which would be able to display the actions within the DJ box, while also creating a huge focal point with something people had never seen before.

It was decided that a large wooden carving on Karma Brighton's East wall would be the starting point of the system. At nearly 6m wide and 2m high, the carving offered a perfect base for us to work with in creating the fantastic projector video effect.

The whole system would be split into two sections, both based on the carving. The first part was to integrate four plasma screens into the carving. The four windows/cut outs in the carving would be the location of the four screens, but in order to fill these we had to use four 42" plasma screens rotated into portrait to get the best out of them. The carving was removed from the wall and four NEC commercial plasma screen displays were fitted within the wall, located in the exact positions so when the carving was refitted, the screens filled the windows without the bezel being visible. By doing this, when the screens are not active, it becomes very difficult to distinguish them as plasma screens. This was in keeping with the venues requests for the system to be very unobtrusive when not in use.

The screens were then wired back to an 8x8 video matrix switcher which was to be remotely controlled via computer. Four DVD players and four CCTV cameras were then wired in allowing the venue to display DVD images and video during the day, and images of the DJ and crowd during the evening. All the content for the DVDs was created specifically for the venue, and rotated during editing to compensate for the rotation of the plasma screens. By having the matrix switcher computer controlled, it allowed us to create a program which chased the images on the screens, giving them a more fluid, continuous look rather than the same image constantly on each screen as you can see in the image below.

The second phase was the video mapping system. This involved fitting two 3500 ansi lumen projectors to project onto the carving. These were mounted within custom ceiling boxes to keep them hidden. The projectors were then connected up to a computer based graphics system using Vga Cables to keep the quality as high as possible. A snapshot image of the carving was then loaded into the system, allowing different parts of the carving to be mapped into the software. This then allowed us to create video and graphics content which could be projected onto specific parts of the carving. By doing this, the carving becomes an interactive projection surface, rather than the normal boring projector screen. By hiding the projectors it gives the impression that during the day the carving is nothing more than a feature on the wall, but at night it appears to quite literally "come alive".

By combining these two parts, the overall system gives a huge effect. To finish off, we moved the DJ box to in front of the carving, creating a focal point and allowing the new DJ to be shown off to the crowd. The system was programmed to run automatic shows, with the ability for the DJ to trigger specific visuals in time with the music, adding further to the overall impact of the system.

What are the basics of replacing a laptop screen?

My screen is cracked. I have the replacement screen. Do I have to remove the bezel around the lcd or do I disasemble the laptop's housing or both? It looks like the new screen has everything needed minus the hinge covers....and I cant figure out how to remove the hinge covers on my laptop

How to Clean an LCD Screen

Cleaning a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen sounds like it should be a fairly straightforward thing to do, however there are some things you should know about properly cleaning your LCD screen. For starters, and LCD screen is unlike the old fashioned television screens, and is not produced using glass. Therefore, some precautions must be observed when cleaning the display.

1) Purchase a proper cleaning solution/kit.

Though you may decide to skip this step, I suggest purchasing a proper LCD cleaning solution and/or kit. Many manufacturers have created specially formulated solutions for cleaning LCD display screens for desktop and laptop monitors. If you can find a kit, I would use that as it already has a soft cloth in it, as well as the solution. Depending on the manufacturer, I have found very desireable results from cleaning gummy/dusty LCD screens with a purchased product over a homemade cleaning solution. The manufacturers products also seem to have good evaporative properties, which ties in with not accidently getting the cleaning solution inside of the LCD unit.

2) Use a soft cloth.

It may sound like a simple step, but many people will just grab whatever they can find to clean the screen. Due to the material used for LCD screens, especially those that have a glossy (shiny) finish, cloth that is not soft may put abrasive marks onto your screen. This is very undesirable, and will greatly reduce the quality of images on your LCD screen.

3) Do not use a window cleaning solution!

Many people will tell you that they have used Windex to clean their LCD screens, and that they have never run into troubles with it. Windex, and other window cleaning solutions will eventually start to wreak your screen. Another reason not to use these types of solutions is that they are usually quite runny, and are made that way to cover large areas. This is not what we want for our LCD screens, as some of the liquid, if used alot, may seep into the edges of the screen, and cause distortion of colors on the screen, or short-circuit the electronic components.

4) Proper techniques for applying cleaning solution.

This bit is important because you will not want to have left over residue or streaks after you just cleaned your LCD screen! Lots of people have different techniques, however, the one that seems to work for me, when I cleaned the LCD screens at the computer store I worked at was to wipe in a circular motion. I've noticed that when some of the others cleaning wiped from left to right, or vertically, that it left some bad residue in corners and streaks that were very visible. If you wipe in a small circular motion, getting into the corners and going over the screen a couple times, you should have no residue left, and you will not notice streaks. It is exactly like buffing your car, or boots, etc. You do not need to apply alot of pressure, but you should make sure that you spend a good 3-5 minutes on your computer/laptop screen, and probably a bit more for larger LCD TV screens.

I need to output an HD signal (1080p) from a PC to multiple HD LCD screens, what is the optimal wiring?

I know HDMI has a maximum of 60 FT (I need around 200 FT, maybe more) to wire a big establishment, multiple screens! So obviously I need to also split them somehow, I thought about Cable monitors(Vga Cables), but not sure about the feasibility!! Any ideas?

This is done all the time in commercial installations. There are several ways to go about it - none of them are cheap.

You will need a HDMI distribution amp - this will convert one output to four (Kramer KR-VM4HDMI):

The closer TV's may be able to use a long Hdmi Cable. If not, you will need HDMI to CAT 5 converters for each TV (Gefen HDMICAT5-MS):

As you can see this is going to get expensive. The cheaper way may be to get an HD cable box for each TV and then you would only be running cheap RG6 cable from your source (cable TV, satt or whatever).

There are many other options too - but if you insist on full HD at each TV from one source, it will get expensive.

Many business call in a commercial AV company to do these types of jobs - it will cost you, but it may be worth it in the end.

Acer Aspire 3810 Laptop review:

The Acer Aspire 3810 Timeline laptop is equipped with a six-cell Acer Aspire 3810 Battery , providing up to 8 hours of Laptop Battery life. It's a lightweight 13.3 inch notebook with configurations featuring either an Intel Core 2 Duo or Pentium dual-core processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM, a 5-in-1 media Card Reader and integrated webcam.

Long laptop battery life is the oft-touted but rarely fulfilled specification for many a laptop. But now Acer has delivered on the promise with the Acer Aspire Timeline 5810T, a thin and lightweight but usefully powerfully 15in notebook.

The Acer Aspire Timeline 5810T is slightly wider than 15in in fact, as it uses a new-style widescreen display that measures up at 15.6in in its 16:9 ratio. This glossy panel is bright and cheerful enough, colourful without being as oversaturated as some panels we see.

The two big things you'll find missing on the Timeline 3810T are an Optical Drive and Bluetooth (although both are available in related 14- and 15-inch configurations). We're perfectly happy to skip the DVD burner, but Bluetooth is very handy for tethering a 3G smartphone, or for connecting a travel mouse.

Intel's single-core SU series CPUs (part of the Consumer Ultra-Low-Voltage line, or CULV) have been generally lackluster performers, but the dual-core U9400 version in the Timeline 3810T provides a much more usable overall experience. It easily out-performed the single-core MSI X340, and in anecdotal use it felt perfectly capable of performing standard tasks smoothly, such as Web surfing, working on office documents, and media playback. Of course, adding 4GB of RAM also helps--both the MSI X340 and Dell Adamo had only half that.

Trends In The Business Office

In the 1980s, it wasn't uncommon to see large, oversized desks, wingback leather executive chairs and lots of filing cabinets. In the 1990s, offices became more compact. The prevalence of the computer began to reduce the amount of paper files needed and the filing cabinets began to wane. Office workers realized that working at a computer desk was much different than working at a desk where all work was done with a typewriter and calculator. Doctors began to understand that diseases like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome were linked to repetitive motions like mouse-clicking and keyboard use, giving birth to increasingly ergonomic desk and computer desk accessory designs.

At the turn of the millennium, people were well aware of the importance of articulating keyboard arms, ergonomically designed chairs, and adjustable LCD monitor arms. And just when they thought they'd created comfortable, productive workstations, along came the laptop to throw a wrench in the mix.

As companies realized that laptops were far more affordable, mobile, and convenient than desktop computers, laptops began popping up in companies all over the country, replacing the bulky traditional computer. Assistants as well as executives can easily take their laptops with them, allowing them to work hassle-free in airports, hotels, at conference centers, and of course, at their very own desks. With wi-fi pretty much everywhere, there's no reason not to make the switch from computer to laptop.

But with a new type of computer came a new problem to revisit. How do we make laptops ergonomic and functional for everyday use? Setting a laptop on a desk does little to provide a comfortable, ergonomic workstation. There are no keyboards to be tilted at the correct angles or lowered to the correct heights. There are no monitors that can be tilted or angled to keep the user looking straight ahead. So how do we make laptop users comfortable?

One way is by adding a sliding laptop tray to your existing desk. Laptop trays allow you to pull the laptop out to use it, and then slide it back when working on the desktop. They also lower the keypad of the laptop tray so that the user isn't reaching up at such a severe angle.

Another way is to buy a height-adjustable chair to control the user's height. While traditional keyboard arms allow for height control of the keyboard while the user is stationary, an adjustable chair allows the user to change his/her height and keep the laptop's keyboard stationary.
