Is there an adapter or converter or a Pci Card to change a PATA drive to a Sata Drive?

I need to install a new larger SATA internal drive on an older desktop that only has the Parallel Ports on the board. Does Best Buy carry them?

yes... the "Plexus RXD-629 SATA to Ide Converter (Connect a SATA Drive To Ide Motherboard )" can be found at http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139072
this inexpensive converter simply slots into any ide(pata) hard or Optical Drive and then all you need to do is insert the following connectors :
1.floppy Drive Connector : this is for powering the converter
2.4pin molex... since your drive is still a pata(ide) drive it still uses a 4pin molex
3. sata Data Cable : this connects to the converter and then to the sata port on your motherboard
alternatively if you dont have any Sata Ports on your motherboard you can transform a spare Ide Port on your motherboard by :
1) insert 1 x converter into the ide port on your motherboard
2) insert another converter into the ide Hard Drive you wish to use
3) insert floppy power connectors into both converters....
( note : if you require more floppy power connections you can buy a molex to floppy adapter at http://www.ebuyer.com/search?q=floppy+power+adapter )
basically as long as you have the floppy power connectors you can use as many of these as you need
they also work if you want to set up a raid array... however your motherboard needs to support raid for this to work

Is it ok to connect 3 pc components to a single internal Sata Power line?

I want to know if it's ok if I connect 2 hard drives and my dvd drive to one of a single sata line from my psu. It's a 650 watt psu.

It's ok (power side only) not serial, if U don't have a voltage drop that would hamper normal operation of each component and of course each component must be the same voltage..<< check dvd voltage>> the dvd should have a seperate line (because 0f load).. U should have more connectors avaliable for each device. U can buy connectors to add more devices to one line.. under moderate heavy load the voltage can display a fluctuation of between 0.04% and 0.06% and thats ok. have fun.

Hard Drive Format May Cause Failure In Windows Small Business Server 2003

Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 is an incorporated server suite, developed and marketed by Microsoft Corporation. It is designed for running the network infrastructure of medium and small business enterprises having around 75 users or workstations. You can upgrade to this version of Windows operating system from Windows 2000 server. However, in some cases, during the installation process you may encounter several error message. The errors prevent you from accessing your hard drive and cause data loss. In such circumstances, you need to opt for Hard Drive Recovery to get your mission critical data back.

I managed to get the old drive out and put the new Sata Drive in, with a converter (IDE to SATA) it tried to booth up and asked for the Windows Vista disc, I did this and it tried once again to booth up, after excepting the terms and conditions, I clicked next and it tried find the driver for the Windows vista from the Windows Vista CD. It could not find it.
My computer is trying to find the drives for windows Vista to load the Vista onto my computer.
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to get the Windows Vista working. do I need to go to the BIos and do something?? I am not very good doing such things so any help you can provide me with would be very helpful. Thanks

Your problem is the drive is unformatted and Windows does not have the required SATA controller to access the unformatted part of that drive. On the CD that comes with the Motherboard should be a software package to make a SATA disk, this is often found in the utilities folder (or extras or something similar) it may also be in the SATA drivers folder as well. You need to create this floppy disc, in the 1st few seconds of the Windows install you will see the option to load SATA drivers (press F6) a minute or so later it will ask to insert the FD, simply follow the instructions, load the SATA Controller Driver from the FD (may be more than one for Vista) then Windows will continue to install. Vista is normally pretty good at preloading SATA controllers so you may find that your Driver disc may not have Vista drivers for the SATA, go to the mainboard manufacturers website and download them. You can try loading the XP ones as they often work.

Choosing the Right Hard Drive

How much memory and storage space do I need for my new PC? Should I opt for removable storage instead? What is a gigabyte anyway? If you find yourself asking these questions, don’t get discouraged. Buying the right hard drive requires research, thought, and a lot of patience. This article will help you narrow down your search and pick the hard drive that’s right for you.

First, you must determine whether you need an internal or External Hard drive. If you’re looking for the easiest way to add data storage capacity to your computer, then you should go with an External Hard Drive. They’re great for backing up your PC, and they allow you to easily share photos, videos, and songs with others. Ideal for those who travel, external hard drives are physically very small so you can take them with you wherever you go.

On the other hand, internal hard drives are designed for replacing or expanding the storage of a single PC. They offer massive storage capabilities, the highest performance, and the lowest cost per gigabyte. Most desktop PC cases have at least one internal drive bay (the place where you can mount extra hard drives). However, before you purchase an additional drive for your system, make sure your case has enough room. If you have a smaller, low-profile case, you won’t be able to use the old and new drives simultaneously. You’ll also have to choose between the two interfaces: PATA (Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment, also known as IDE drives) and SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment). In most cases, SATA drives are a better choice for a few reasons—they’re slightly faster, they’re easier to connect, and they don’t require you to configure jumpers as PATA drives do. Nonetheless, the performance tends to be similar.

The next thing you need to do is determine the size of the hard drive, which simply refers to its data storage capacity. For the most part, the size of the hard drive depends on what you plan to do with your computer. If you’re just browsing the web or doing a little word processing, you probably don’t need more than 8-10 gigabytes. The lower capacity drives are typically less expensive and should only be used to handle basic computing needs. But if you plan on storing large amounts of data, music, or pictures, you’ll want to go with a larger hard drive to avoid running out of space.

Next, you must choose the speed of the hard drive, which is measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Hard drives consist of a disc that rotates and a needle which reads/writes data to this disc. The faster the disc spins, the faster the data is read and written. For the average user, 5400 RPM is perfectly adequate. But if you want your system to be as fast as possible, then choose a hard drive with 7200 RPM.

General Tips:

Shop around. Hard drives come in different sizes to suit different storage needs, and they’re priced very competitively. So spend a little time searching for a killer deal, and you’ll certainly be glad you did.  

Look out for warranties. In general, you should get at least a 3-year warranty on your hard drive.

Consider buying a hard-drive kit, which includes mounting hardware, cables, detailed instructions, and software that eases installation. A kit may also include an application for cloning the contents of your old hard drive onto the new one, which then becomes your new main drive.

If you’ve outgrown your existing storage, it may be easier and cheaper to upgrade a drive instead of buying an entirely new one. And if you’re an avid gamer, opt for a drive with approximately 10,000 RPM.

Internal hard drive replacement?

I have an HP 6768SE, my former hard drive was a Serial Ata drive. I'm really not sure what type of hard drive i can buy, i recently bought an internal hard drive (SATA) but it would not connect to my PC. Could anyone tell me why since i don't really know too much about hard drives. They are both SATA, so shouldn't it connect to the PC?

The first step is make sure the jumpers are set correctly on the hard drive before connecting the Ide Cables. If the jumper is set correctly for all devices on that Ide Cable then the computer should have no problem recognizing at the very minimum that it is a hard drive.

Edit: I see the ATA serial is not IDE, still need to check the jumper though... other than that, not sure why it would not recognize it, supose to be plug and play.
