Buying a Laptop? Checkout These Basic Info

Laptops are small mobile computers that are light and portable enough to fit on your lap. They weigh usually in the range of 4 to10 pounds depending on the materials, size and other factors. When compared to the PC Desktop, the portable laptops are different on the basis of peripherals and weight. A typical portable Laptop Computer has a weight of four to five pounds. Some bulkier laptops range in their weights from six to seven pounds as they may have a CDROM/DVDROM or a Floppy Drive.

Osborne 1 was the first available portable computer in 1981 for commercial use. This portable computer weighed about 24 pounds and was available at a price of about 1800 dollars. Later IBM launched ‘Kaypro’ in 2000, which had a LCD display of 25 lines and 80 characters, a removable keyboard and a floppy drive of 3.5 inches.

The following are the different types of laptops. Ultra-Mobile PCs are small in size and portable. Ultra portables have LCD screen of about 12 inches or less, weighing about 3 to 5 pounds. Thin-and-light Laptops typically weigh about 4 to 6 pounds and have a screen size of 12 to 14 inches. Mainstream Laptops have a screen size of about 14.1 inches to 15.4 inches and weigh about 5 to 7 pounds.

Laptops have proven to be useful in many ways. While on the move, from students to business executives, software professionals and housewives have found laptops to be beneficial. Laptops are available across a wide range of brands, models, sizes, styles and prices. As the innovative laptops have increased in demand, leading notebook manufacturers such as IBM, HP-Compaq, Dell, Acer, Sony and Toshiba are offering sophisticated laptops with innovative features and designs. As the demand for laptops has increased, you should be careful when choosing a laptop. You can look for reviews on laptops from online sources and the manufacturers also provide the information on the various models available with details of prices, specifications and ratings on their websites.

Laptops have to be chosen based on the features such as Portability, Price, Screen size, speed, memory, upgradeability, hard drives, batteries and hardware. Other peripherals such as standard floppy or DVD drives are required. Though laptops are expensive than desktop computers for similar configurations, the price tag is not big when compared to the functions they offer.

I saw an offer for a Dell D610 Laptop reburbished for $340. I am not a computer guru. Is this a good deal?

Dell Latitude D610 Pentium 4 (M) 1600 MHz. Processor [Pentium 4 (M) 1.6 gig processor runs faster and cooler than a normal Pentium 4 chip]

These are actually still a nice laptop in the grand scheme of things. Not something you're going to game on but nice for everything else.

My concern is about all refurb stuff. If it has some warranty like a year, it may be worth 340. That much for a several year old laptop is a bit pricy seeing as new laptops are coming in at the 400 and 500 range.

I'd definitely consider a new laptop if I was going to shell out 340 for an older refurb. Good luck with your new laptop!

Important points to consider before deciding on your external Hard Drive

Computers are used in most places these days, be it at homes or at the office place. There is lot of data that needs to be stored. It is always advisable to have a backup of the data so that in case the computer crashes down due to certain viruses, you have a copy of your data. An External Hard drive can go a long way in helping meet your requirements of external data storage. Before buying one, you can have a look at the following tips to decide the one you wish to go for.

1. 1.)   There are branded external hard drives and there are local ones too. The local ones are cheaper than the branded ones. Though a branded hard drive is expensive, it is better to go for one as it comes with a warranty and is obviously made with superior parts in it. If you buy a local External Hard Drive, you do not receive any warranty for it and chances are high that it might be made with low-quality parts. As this is a long term investment, buying a branded one and spending few extra dollars will not pinch at all.
2. 2.)   When you need to decide on the size of the external hard drive, see your storage requirements and double the figure keeping your future needs in mind. Also note that the price per GB is lesser as you go for higher storage capacity hard drives. If you are looking for a computer at home, then a 50GB size would suffice and if you want an external hard drive for a company, then it is advisable to go in for a 500 or 1000GB size drive. With storage requirements increasing by the day, very soon, we will be talking not in terms of GB (gigabytes) but in terms of TB (terabytes).
3. 3.)   While deciding for the connector, eSATA and FireWire are faster than USB ports. eSATA works at a speed that is 6 times faster than FireWire. But, please note that most computer systems are equipped with USB ports. If your machine has USB 1.0 port, then your machine might work at a slow speed. You will need to get a USB 2.0 Port Card fitted to speed up things. If you are looking for an external hard drive for your personal desktop or laptop, then going for one with a Usb Connector is sufficient. However, if you are looking for a company with many computers operating and lot of Data Transfer from one machine to another, then it is better to go in for eSATA or FireWire connectors as they transfer data at a much faster speed.
4. 4.)   Always do proper research on the Internet before buying a brand. Check out its price on different websites, the reviews posted and always buy from a reliable website.
5. 5.)   It is obviously better to have an external hard drive that operates faster. Buy a hard drive with at least 4MB buffer size and one that operates above 5400rpm. These days, hard drives operating at around 7200rpm are gaining popularity as they work at a very fast speed.

Keep these above five points in mind before selecting the external hard drive and keep a backup of all your important data.

Disable Simple File Sharing

The first thing to do is verify that Simple File Sharing is disabled. This can be done from My Computer. Using the menu bar, navigate to Tools then Folder Options. On the View Tab, navigate to the Use simple file sharing option, uncheck it and click OK. It can always be re-enabled after applying the NTFS settings. Detailed information on disabling this feature can be found at the Microsoft Support web-site.

Configure Folder & File Security

Disabling Simple File Sharing will enable and give access to the Security Tab Right clicking on the file or folder and choose properties will reveal the Security Tab and the permissions assigned to specific users or groups. The Users group is normally given permissions by default. This allows anyone with access to the computer to read files. This can be removed or modified if desired.

Be very careful to make sure that at least one user account or group always has Full Control. The Deny column should also be used sparingly since it is always evaluated first and can end up preventing even Administrators access to the file. An Administrator can modify any assigned permissions.

EFS (Encrypting File System) is the encryption protocol used to protect files and folders on an NTFS drive. To enable this feature, go to the file or folder properties and click on the Advanced button in the General Tab.
