Ways To Accomplish The Glossy Tan

A glossy golden brown tan to set off toned limbs - that's the stuff which the young fashion-conscious dreams are made of. The pursuit of that bronzed, sun-kissed look has led to an influx of sun worshippers in bikinis, board shorts, and bare chests congregating at the beaches. But just how much do they know about the dangers associated with excessive sun exposure?

A lot of youths are adventurous, fun loving and are passionate about sports. This may just cause them to overlook the necessity of proper sun protection. While many outdoor sports like soccer, wakeboarding, windsurfing etc are undoubtedly beneficial to health, the risks of excessive sun exposure to the participants are also very real.

Sun Damage

The sun emits 3 types of ultraviolet (UV) rays: UVA, UVB and UVC. Only UVA and UVB rays reach the earth's surface because UVC is filtered out by the ozone layer.

UVA penetrates deeply into the skin and triggers the production of melanin, which is a pigment in our body that causes skin to tan. UVB primarily affects the skin's outer layer and causes sunburn. UV rays are thought to be responsible for chronic photo-aging (cluster of skin conditions like hyper pigmentation, wrinkles and sagging skin), and skin cancer.

Sunburn is one of the short-term damages of sun exposure. It ranges from redness and pain to redness and swelling, and in some serious cases, blisters can occur.

Frequent sunburns have been associated with increased risks of getting skin cancers. There are 3 common types of skin cancers: squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and malignant melanoma.

Most SCC and BCC cases are caused by chronic exposure to sunlight. These tumors appear most commonly on sun-exposed areas like the face, hands, back, shoulders and lower lip. SCC tumors are irregular and fleshy growths that can enlarge and break down into ulcers.

BCC tumors are often shiny and pigmented, with raised borders. The Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF) in New York, USA, estimates that some 800,000 and 200,000 Americans suffer from BCC and SCC annually respectively.

Malignant melanoma is cancer of the skin's pigment cells. It may form in pre-existing moles, where pigmentation is heavily concentrated. The tumors are presented as large, thick and colored (red, blue or black) patches that grow rapidly, with irregular outlines. The SCF estimates that about 51,000 new cases of malignant melanoma are reported annually in the USA.

On a less fatal note, exposure to bright light can also trigger migraines and headaches, for up to 24 hours. Melasma is another UV-related skin disorder characterized by symmetrical brown pigmentation patches in UV-exposed areas and affects women 90% of the time.

Block Out the Sun

Much as knowledge of sun exposure dangers is important, knowing how to minimize risks is even more essential. Techniques to minimize damage from sun rays can be divided into those to do with behavior and those to do with fabrics.

Behavior wise, sun-lovers can refrain from carrying out high-risk activities between 10am and 4pm, when the sun's rays are the strongest. On a general note, try to keep in the shade while going about normal activities.

Fabrics that are sun-protective have tight weaves and are dark-colored. To test for a tight weave, hold the garment about 7 inches from your eyes towards a light source. If visible light can penetrate holes between the threads, so can UV rays. Dark colors absorb harmful UV rays better than light-colored clothes and hence protect the skin better.

To protect the face, sunscreen is essential, preferably one with at least Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 20. Reliable brands include Sunkiller, La Roche-Posay and Coppertone. If sun exposure time is expected to be long, then a sunscreen of higher SPF of 45 or 60 is recommended. One often-neglected directive is to reapply sunscreen frequently throughout the day, as sweat or friction may have washed it away. For the eyes, sunglasses with UV-protective coating are advised.

Alternative Tones

Fashion-conscious youths who covet a tan but are afraid of increasing their skin cancer risks have started to frequent tanning salons. This misguided attempt only reduces the incidence of sunburn and not skin cancer, warns Dr Wong, an associate consultant dermatologist with the National Skin Centre of Singapore.

"In fact, by going to tanning salons, you are exposed to unnecessary excessive UVA, which may increase your risk of getting skin cancer as it is primarily UVA-mediated."

One relatively harmless alternative to sun tanning is to use self-tanning lotions. These contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with proteins in dead skin cells on the skin surface to result in brown pigmentation, which becomes the tan. While self-tanning lotions, like other topical products, have been known to cause skin irritation, no adverse long-term effects have been recorded.

As we welcome the warm, sunny weather, do keep in mind the relevant risks and precautions. Being cautious when young may just save you lots of heartache and pain in later years.

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

Philip Pullman was so inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia that he decided to make his own imitation of C.S. Lewis' fantasy series. Except, where Lewis wrote to inspire people toward healthy spirituality and reconciliation with God, Pullman writes to promote mysticism and discourage people from seeking God. Like C.S. Lewis, Pullman gears his magical tales for younger audiences. Except, where Lewis wrote to expand children's imaginations and encourage innocence, Pullman wrote to impress his intellectual cynicism on young people.

Pullman's writing ability as well as the cinematography of the Golden Compass are top notch. The movie was designed to make millions, obviously. But the substance of the story is cliché at worst, uninspired at best.

In the Golden Compass, all humans have little spirit friends called "daemons," personified by animals. This, in a nutshell, demonstrates the unoriginality of man-made spirituality. Pullman can come up with new daemons to whatever extent God invents new animals.

Pullman, an intellectual, couldn't help deifying intellectualism. The "free-thinking" academics of the story were the only people in town who would step up to the plate and take a swing for free-will and free-thought. This makes sense from Pullman's perspective, as someone who is a plumber by trade might join a plumber's union in order to uphold the rights of plumbers everywhere.

Pullman demonstrated this general rule: Godless people's ability to detect cliché is handicapped by their tainted, self-destructive passions.

I suspect that Pullman has been burned by religion. He uses the Golden Compass to portray an insidious religious establishment, which he calls the "Magisterium." According to Pullman, this establishment, made up of "the authorities," is the source of all evil.

The tragedy here is that Pullman's negative experience with the Catholic church might have driven him toward a healthy, genuine spirituality if he had only asked God for help directly. But, instead of reconciliation, he opted for bitterness and cynicism. This was the weaker thing to do. It is easier to embrace hopelessness and doubt rather than trust God.

By the looks of it, he not only doubts God, he also doubts his choice to doubt God. Why else would he go to such lengths to justify himself? He went as far as writing a series of books that culminate with the death of "god".

Pullman is distracted by man-made religion. Man-made religion is not of God. That's why it's called "man-made." Pullman figured out that the Catholic church is a fake. Whoopdee doo, he's not the first one to figure this out. The wisest response to this would have been to seek out the Truth directly. Instead he decided to sit around and pout.

Pullman has been deceived by his own bitterness and regret. He is so thoroughly led astray that he equates sin with goodness. According to his story (this surfaces more in his later books), when people rebelled against god, a supernatural substance called "dust" was introduced into the world. This dust is the source of all good things, free will in particular. The Magisterium doesn't want anyone to know about this wonderful spiritual substance. So, according to Pullman, the church wants to eliminate sin, but this is bad because sin is actually the best thing that's ever happened to people. As soon as the people in the Golden Compass story rediscover this dust and embrace its life-giving power, they will be free from the stifling oppression of the Magisterium.

Again, the tragedy here is that Pullman started to discover the truth about man-made religion: It distracts people from genuine spirituality. His disillusion almost drove him to find Life; instead he found death disguised as Life.

Pullman, like any godless person, admires rebelliousness. This is shortsighted and foolish. A rebellious man does not know who he is. He only knows who he is not. God will tell people who they really are. Most people, however, choose to worship anything but God because they want to define themselves. This is imitation freedom.

The Golden Compass is discouraging because it is uninspired. Some works of men were meant to be. Some creations are brought to life by a pure, fiery passion to create. This is not easy, mind you. An inspired vision requires sweat and labor to manifest either on paper, on screen or on stage. But it takes hard-headed coercion to bring uninspired work to fruition. Any task undertaken apart from or deliberately against God must be forced into existence by manly stubbornness. Such work is exhausting to the person working as well as discouraging to anyone who might behold this work.

i have bought SVGA to 3 RCA , VGA to S-Video / RCA Adaptor Cable and Svga Monitor Vga Male to Male M-M Cable Lead HD15 but only the latter one has really connected but it says out on range on my tv(pc channel). i have a pc mode on my tv. i have tried all channels thou help please

If your TV has VGA input, then just go from your computer's VGA output to your TV's VGA input. The input and output port on both the devices should match, if you have S-Video Out on your computer and S-video in on your TV, you should do it that way, same with a DVI in and out. You may have to buy a Video Card if your tv and computer don't have compatable outputs and inputs. Otherwise on Sony's Help and Support site, they should have the information you need, I have a Sony Vaio myself.

Getting a new TV for the home is a major purchase nowadays. If you are going to invest what most people would consider to be a large amount of money or at the very least a small fortune then it might be an idea to try and do some investigation and gfet it right at the outset.

Finally our overall opinion would be that this TV has a great amount to commend it in a number of ways but sadly we feel is let down by the actual perfromnce of the picture which sadly for a Flat Screen TV is rather important we feel.

You could either opt for one of the more cutting edge newer options available or stay safe and go for one of the more established options available. Using LCD flat screen as a computer screen?

I'm trying to hook up my Citizen LCD TV as my cpu monitor and it just will not work. The back of the TV has a VGA plug in, so i will plug that into my computer and when i turn the tv to the computer mode, its just a blue screen? I've tried rebooting, differant VGA cord ect. Wont work. Yet it works on my monitor and the flat screen in my parents room?? Any suggestions?

The TV has a menu and you need to get into the menu and switch the input to VGA.
